Sell your Walter Ufer painting
This page explains how Steven Stern Fine Arts approaches a Walter Ufer, from the first photographs you send to a finished sale or consignment.
What to send us
Clear photographs settle most first questions about a Ufer. Please send:
- the complete front, taken straight on without glare;
- the full reverse, showing any title, place name such as Taos, date, stamp or label;
- a close view of the signature;
- the size of the picture itself (not the frame), and whether it is oil on canvas or board, or a work on paper;
- any history you know: how it came into the family, receipts, exhibition labels, prior appraisals.
Please don't clean, reframe or remove labels from the painting before we have seen it.
How we evaluate a Ufer
Every evaluation is free and confidential. The gallery weighs authorship, period, subject, medium, condition, provenance, exhibition history, literature and the work's place in his career. With Ufer, subject and period are central: a large Taos figure painting from his peak years in the 1920s, a small New Mexico landscape and an early European or Chicago picture each appeal to somewhat different buyers.
Your options
- Direct purchase by the gallery.
- Consignment, with the gallery offering the painting to its collectors for you.
- Private sale and advice for significant single works, estates and mixed collections.
Seeing the painting
The gallery is in Los Angeles and works with Ufer owners nationwide, from Chicago and the Midwest, where many of his early patrons lived, to New Mexico and California, travelling to see important pictures.
