About this work

One October Evening is a quiet shore scene: low waves rolling in over a flat, wet beach under a pink evening sky, with a single weathered stump at the water's edge. It is signed and dated 1913 at the lower left, and measures 10 by 12 inches, oil on canvas laid on board.

It belongs to the period of Ufer's second stay in Europe and his return to Chicago, before the 1914 trip to New Mexico that changed his career, and it shows the tonal, atmospheric landscape painting he practised before the high-keyed sunlight of his Taos pictures.

What this record tells an owner

This sale is not a price guide, and each Ufer is judged on its own subject, size, condition and history. His Taos figure paintings, his New Mexico landscapes and his portraits are the core of his reputation, and none of them appears here.
